Post-Summer Pivot

Summer is beautifully designed to offer up delicious distractions and I hope your summer embraced you with fun, care-freedom and joy. With family and friend visits behind you, vacation pictures shared and memories locked in, you can now bring renewed energy and a fresh focus to what you chose to manifest in 2024.

I’ve spoken with several people recently who have found it necessary to look at a goal differently and pivot how they have been pursuing it. Some found deep disappointment in the need to pivot as they were sure that the plans they had laid out would propel them forward. And in talking with them I found that they had totally missed acknowledging the parts of their plan that actually worked!

Falling short doesn’t mean that you need to give up on the goal. It is totally attainable. The results of your effort simply mean that you need to look at, and think about, how to attain your goal differently. Modification is required to get where you want to be and some elements of your plan need to change. Your energy needs to be directed toward some specifically different things while keeping your original goal in clear sight. Your time needs to be spent accomplishing tasks that were not evident to you a few months ago. You need to trust the process of learning from what has been and move toward realigning your intention.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “pivot” as a noun or transitive verb: to adapt or improve by adjusting or modifying (something such as a product, service or strategy). A dear friend recently shared that a pivot gives you the freedom to clear the traffic you need in your space to allow you to move more freely. So, encourage yourself to adjust your line of sight to see more clearly how you will get from “here to there” while not taking your eyes off your destination.

It is true that rethinking the best laid plans can be exhausting. To thwart the exhaustion, I think of it as a time to level upas Ciara sang in one of her summer hits. A successful pivot requires a supercharged commitment, a “double down” on intention and faith in knowing that all that you desire is already underway and will reach you at the appointed time. Your role in all of this is to be willing to accept the pivot as an unexpected invitation to dial things up differently.

If summer has yielded a need for you to pivot, I want you to know that you’ve got this! Call on all of that fun, care-freedom and joy you experienced this summer and put it all to work. A good pivot will still get you exactly where you want to be or even better!

What pivot is underway with you and how are you handling it?
